Confederation of African Football The 53 member CAF (Confederation of African Football), represents international football in Africa, and organises the African Cup of Nations, African Nations Championship CAF Confederation Cup and the African Champions League. The confederation was founded in 1957, and received a guaranteed berth in the World Cup for the first time in 1970. The CAF annually presents the African Footballer of the Year award. CAF also organises the UEFA/CAF Meridian Cup with UEFA for youth teams. There are 10 CAF Nations that participate in the UAFA organised Arab Nations Cup. These are Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Somalia, Sudan and Tunisia. Africa Cup of Nations -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as the African Nations Cup (ANC) is the main international association football competition in Africa. It is sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and was first held in 1957. Since 1968, it has been held every two years. In 1957 there were only three participating nations: Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia. South Africa was to compete, but was disqualified due to the apartheid policies of the government then in power. Since then, the tournament has grown, making it necessary to hold a qualifying tournament. The number of participants in the final tournament reached 16 in 1998 (16 teams were to compete in 1996 but Nigeria withdrew, reducing the field to 15), and since then, the format has been unchanged, with the sixteen teams being drawn into four groups of four teams each, with the top two teams of each group advancing to a "knock-out" stage. Egypt is the most successful nation in the cup's history, winning the tournament a record six times. Ghana and Cameroon have won four titles each. Three different trophies have been awarded during the tournament's history, with Ghana and Cameroon winning the first two versions to keep after each of them won a tournament three times. The current trophy was first awarded in 2002. CAF Champions League -------------------------------------------------------------------- The CAF Champions League is an annual international club football competition run by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The top club sides from Africa's football leagues are invited to participate in this competition, which is the premier club football competition on the continent and the equivalent to the UEFA Champions League. Due to sponsorship reasons, the official name is MTN CAF Champions League, with MTN Champions League also in use. CAF Confederation Cup -------------------------------------------------------------------- The CAF Confederation Cup is an international club association football competition run by the Confederation of African Football. It replaced the African Cup Winners' Cup and the CAF Cup in 2004. The final is a two legged (home and away) affair with ties broken via the away goals rule. CAF Super Cup -------------------------------------------------------------------- The CAF Super Cup is an African football competition. It is a game between the reigning champions of the Confederation Cup and the Champions League. Starting in 1992, it was originally contested by the winners of African Cup of Champions Clubs (Champions League after 1997) and the African Cup Winners' Cup. In 2004 it changed to its current format. The Egyptian Al-Ahly, and Al -Zamalek are the only clubs succeeded to score 3 cups and keep a life time record. The games are held in the second half of the season, usually in February or March. |
